General Responsibilities Summary

Oversees the operation of Community Center by performing the following duties.

Essential Functions

include the following. The list of essential functions is not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary. Other duties may be assigned. Regular and predictable attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this position.

Assists Programming Unit: plans and organizes recreational activities for participants of various age groups; contacts and meets with organizations interested in recreation programs and projects to assist Recreation Superintendent in planning and to provide information on possible facility and equipment use; schedules & implements programs upon approval; prepares and submits to the Recreation Superintendent advertising proposals, news releases, brochures or program modifications for the attraction of new program participants and implements upon Recreation Superintendent's approval; assists with special events such as Easter Egg hunt, carnivals, and boxing tournaments as necessary.

Oversees Center Activities:schedules, assigns, and reviews work activities of full-time and part-time Center staff members and submits employee payroll information to supervisor; compiles and submits Center program revenue and expenditure data into daily, monthly, and quarterly reports and submits to Recreation Superintendent for program evaluation; receives complaints and answers questions from the public, participants and staff; investigates complaints and notifies Recreation Superintendent as appropriate; gathers data and assists in the preparation and update of Center operation manuals as directed; serves as Center supervisor; monitors use of facilities and equipment to ensure compliance with established center policies & procedures; reports discrepancies & incidents to supervisor; monitors conduct of participants, providing discipline for unruly participants; maintains inventory of supplies & equipment; reports equipment failures and needed maintenance to Recreation Superintendent and ensures maintenance and/or repairs are requested and completed; collects fees for various recreational programs and new ID cards; makes bank deposits; issues ID cards; assigns supplies & equipment to staff as needed; trains and instructs staff in proper facilitation of programs or activities and supervises implementation when necessary; orders supplies when needed; monitors condition of equipment in exercise room; issues equipment and supplies to participants; may drive participants to sites away from the Centers for activities; collects data from recreational programs (including numbers, ages of participants, monies received, etc.) for monthly reports.

Performs Maintenance/Janitorial Duties: sets up tables, chairs, and other equipment for programs and special events; takes down and sets up activity equipment as required to make the space available for other use; may change light bulbs in recreational facilities and may occasionally assist maintenance crew with light bulbs in gymnasium; (For locations with a pool) Assists with pool: helps to clean pool and prepare for use; collects monies for pool use; monitors pool operation. (For locations with a tennis court) Assists with operation and cleaning of tennis courts.

High school diploma or GED equivalent; AND 18 months experience and/or training in recreational or related activities; Prefer two (2) years of experience or training managing employees in a recreation (or similar) facility.

A Class D driver's license and good driving record are required and must be maintained throughout employment.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:

The supervisor provides continuing or individual assignments by indicating generally what is to be done, limitations, quality and quantity expected, deadlines, and priority of assignments. The supervisor provides additional, specific instructions for new, difficult, or unusual assignments including suggested work methods or advice on source material available. The employee uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently without specific instruction, but refers deviations, problems, and unfamiliar situations not covered by instructions to the supervisor for decision or help. The supervisor reviews some of the work, with more review of difficult or unfamiliar assignments.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

Provides task supervision for Program/Recreation Aides, Community Service Workers, volunteers, and contract workers, and oversees Community Center facilities & employees.

COMPLEXITY

The work consists of duties that involve related steps, processes, or methods; the decision regarding what needs to be done involves various choices requiring the employee to recognize the existence of and differences among a few easily recognizable situations; actions to be taken or responses to be made differ in such things as the source of information, the kind of transactions or entries, or other differences of a factual nature.

GUIDELINES

A number of specific guidelines are available; judgement is used in locating and selecting the most appropriate guidelines; minor deviations can be made in specific cases; significant deviations are referred to the supervisor.
