The HVAC / Chiller Technician is responsible for the operation, maintenance, repair, and optimization of commercial and industrial HVAC systems with a primary focus on water-cooled and air-cooled chillers. This role ensures peak performance, efficiency, and reliability of chiller systems through proactive maintenance, timely troubleshooting, and adherence to industry best practices.

Essential Duties:

  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance on centrifugal, screw and scroll chillers in accordance with manufacturer guidelines
  • Conduct performance inspections, system diagnostics, and operational testing of chiller components including compressors, condensers, evaporators, pumps, VFD's and controls
  • Monitor chiller performance data and make adjustments to optimize efficiency, capacity, and reliability
  • Monitor water treatment reports to prevent scaling, corrosion, and biological growth in chiller and cooling tower systems
  • Keep accurate maintenance records, service logs, and equipment performance reports
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations, environmental requirements, and refrigerant handling procedures (EPA Section 608)
  • Support seasonal start-up and shutdown procedures for chiller plants
  • Coordinate with contractors, facility engineers, and building management to schedule and execute repairs with minimal operational disruption
  • Other duties as assigned
Rate of Pay: $23.40 per hour *Higher compensation may be considered based on qualifications directly related to position.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical or trade school certification in HVAC/R
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in commercial or industrial HVAC service, with direct experience in chiller maintenance and repair
  • Experience with screw, and scroll chiller systems (e.g., Trane, York, Carrier, Daikin).
  • Experience in mechanical, electrical, and control troubleshooting
Required license(s)/certification(s):
  • HVAC Mechanic in accordance with ACA 17-33-301
  • EPA Section 608 Universal License
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Five years of direct field experience in Chiller Maintenance and Repair
  • OEM factory training/certification from major manufacturers (Trane, Carrier,
  • York, Daiken etc.)
  • OEM or factory authorized VFD training certifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of Building controls platforms Trane/Niagara etc.
  • Knowledge of the laws and regulations relating to HVACR skilled trades
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, manuals, schematics, building plans, and/or work drawings
  • Knowledge of chiller plant operations, performance optimization, and load management
  • Knowledge of principles of HVAC/R systems, particularly screw, and scroll chillers
  • Skilled at diagnosing and repairing chiller components (compressors, heat exchangers, pumps, expansion valves, controls)
  • Ability to respond quickly to emergency breakdowns and restore system operations
  • Ability to stay current with new chiller technologies and evolving industry standards


Physical Demands/Work Environment

The position requires the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull heavy materials and objects weighing up to 100 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment. Must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time. Must be able to work during different weather climates; to include hot/cold weather, rain, etc. Must possess mobility to work in and around buildings and facilities, to operate a motor vehicle and drive on surface streets; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform light to medium physical work, to work in confined spaces and around machines, to climb and descend ladders, and to operate varied hand and power tools and equipment; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio.
